September 2, 2010 - The first garden site visit begins at Sharon Elementary School.

The school garden includes raised beds and traditional garden plots. The garden received a 2009 VCGN mini-grant.

A sturdy shed at Sharon Elementary is used for garden tool storage and for potting plants.

Sharon Elementary has an active Farm to School Program with garden produce integrated into the cafeteria and curriculum.

Driving through the village of South Strafford, we spot a group of students from the Newton School harvesting produce from their garden.

Gardening teacher Kate Reimanis works with the students as they joyfully dig into a bed of carrots.

Freshly pulled carrots are washed and sampled right in the garden.

A basket soon fills with carrots for the lunchroom.

A larger garden area is located in a meadow behind the Newton School.

An arched entry way beckons visitors to explore the school garden.

A solar powered electric deer fence surrounds the Newton School Garden.

The Thetford Elementary School Garden began in 2007 and received a VCGN mini-grant in 2008.

Thetford Elementary School has an active school garden club and summer youth garden program.

Located on the Thetford Center village green, the Thetford Community Garden received a VCGN mini-grant in 2010.

The allotment style community garden opened in 2010. The fenced garden area is 100 ft. x 40 ft.

The Thetford Community Garden includes individual plots and a teaching/production plot to grow produce for the Thetford Food Shelf.

The Putney Community Garden opened in 2010 on land located across from the Putney Coop.

The Putney Central School Community Garden opened in 2004 on land behind the school.

A garden day camp is held during the summer at the Putney Central School Community Garden.

The Shepherd's Hill Community Garden is located east of Woodstock, Vermont in the village of Taftsville.

Shepherd's Hill Community Garden received a VCGN mini-grant in 2009 and opened in 2010.

Ellen Terie and Barbara Barry coordinate the Shepherd's Hill Community Garden. The garden is affiliated with Sustainable Woodstock.

Sustainable Woodstock successfully started five new community gardens in the Woodstock area in just two years.

The Billings Farm Community Garden opened in 2010 on land provided by the Billings Farm and Museum in Woodstock.

Water for the Billings Farm Community Garden is supplied via a hand operated pitcher pump submersed in a nearby stream.

Chipper's Community Garden is located on the Pomfret Road north of the village of Woodstock.

Land for the allotment style community garden is supplied by Chipper's - a land, turf, and tree care company based in Pomfret.

At the Pomfret School, students grow corn, beans, and squash in a Three Sisters Garden.

The King Farm Community Garden opened in 2009. The allotment style community garden is located at the headquarters of Sustainable Woodstock.

The community garden has the feel of a Vermont hill farm.

Chickens wandering outside the garden fence add to the ambiance of the King Farm Community Garden.

Sustainable Woodstock volunteers worked with residents of the Riverside Mobile Home Park to install 18 raised bed vegetable gardens.

Gardens abound at Woodstock Elementary School.

Garden patches and playgrouund equipment share the outdoor space.

Raised bed gardens are framed with straw bales. The compost bin is constructed of wooden pallets.

The Stony Brook Community Garden in Stockbridge opened in 2010 with help from a VCGN mini-grant.

Located at the Earth Community Nature Center, the garden site includes a greenhouse to help extend the growing season.

Raised bed gardens surround Stockbridge Central School.

More raised beds are located in the community park across from Stockbridge Central School.

The Duxbury Community Garden is located south of the village of Waterbury on River Road.

The allotment style community garden opened in 2010 with support from a VCGN mini-grant.

Tall sunflowers reach to the sky at the Duxbury Community Garden.

The Growing Together Community Garden is located in Hinesburg on land provided by the Community Alliance Church.

The garden includes individual raised beds and group beds.

Gardeners at the site generously share their produce with friends, family members, and neighbors.

Several gardeners use trellises to expand their growing space vertically.

Weeds, plant debris, and food waste are broken down in a three bin composter.

Hand painted signs are used to label garden plots.

VCGN members like Sahra Aschenbach are working with Friends of Burlington Gardens to help their local communities become healthier and more food secure.
