Senator
Bernie Sanders has announced the
securing of federal funding to establish a state-wide, school-based
summer gardening initiative that teaches Vermont children and youths
how to grow fresh produce using land on or adjacent to school campuses.
Friends of Burlington Gardens will administer the statewide pilot
program as a model for similar programs in other states.
The Vermont Community Foundation partnered with Friends of Burlington
Gardens to submit a federal grant application to the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) in January 2010.
The federal grant funding will allow Friends of Burlington Gardens to
provide technical assistance and
mini-grants of $1,000 each to support the development of 40 school
community gardens in Vermont in 2011. Mini-grant applications will be
available starting in January 2011.

Announcements and program updates regarding
the mini-grant application process will be made through the
Vermont Community Garden Network
e-newsletter, which is published monthly by Friends of Burlington
Gardens, and via this web page. Mini-grants will be awarded to the 40
school community gardens in early spring 2011.
