Portal to community and
school
garden directories
(click
on headings or photos to access directories)
In
more than 20 Vermont towns, residents can sign up for a plot in an
allotment style community garden. Garden size, fees, and organizational
structure varies from garden to garden. Our directory includes new and
established community gardens maintained through the efforts of Vermont
Community Garden
Network members.
Dozens of Vermont schools from pre-K to high school maintain active
school and
community-based garden projects. Our directory includes Vermont
schools that participate in the Vermont Community
Garden
Network.
Group
gardens in Vermont
Group gardens include
gardens serving young children, youths, seniors, families, housing
projects, immigrants, and people with disabilities.
Group gardens often include an educational program and may be sponsored
by a nonprofit organization or an agency serving limited income
residents.
Burlington Area
Community Gardens Program
The City of
Burlington, through the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department,
maintains a network of eight community garden sites with nearly 400
garden plots. The BACG program administered by Parks and Recreation
serves nearly 1500 residents of Burlington and adjacent towns.

Neighborhood
gardens in Burlington
Neighborhood gardens
are categorized as small community garden projects that are coordinated
by a housing project or neighborhood group. FBG offers technical
assistance to groups or organizations interested in starting
and sustaining community-based garden projects that serve multiple
people.
Burlington School Garden Project
Through support from
FBG and the efforts of parents, volunteers, and
community partners, all of Burlington's elementary, middle, and high
schools are currently involved in gardening, primarily using raised
beds. FBG offers a garden-based nutrition program during the summer at
several schools.
A diversity of
garden projects sponsored by nonprofits, social service agencies, and
city departments help meet the food security and recreational needs of
Burlington residents with a special focus on youths and immigrants.
Gardening can offer
many health and social benefits for seniors and
people with disabilities. Accessible gardens often involve specially
designed raised beds; visit this link for examples and images..
Greenbelt gardening is a unique form of
small space gardening that is common in Burlington's Old North End.
Suggested guidelines and links to articles about greenbelt gardening
are included on this page.
