Enjoy
a community
potluck supper at 6 p.m. followed at 7 p.m. by the Vermont premier of
The Garden, a 2008 Academy
Award nominated documentary by Scott Hamilton Kennedy. The film follows
the struggle of a group of urban community gardeners as they fight to
save the 14-acre South Central Farm in Los Angeles from being bulldozed
by developers. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A.
riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers created a miracle in one of
the country’s most blighted neighborhoods.
Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from
countries
where they feared
for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize,
fight back, and demand answers. The Garden explores and exposes the
fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging
questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most
vulnerable among us.
Parents please
note that the film is unrated with brief strong
language during confrontational scenes.
The showing is cosponsored by the FUMC Justice
and
Social Concerns
Committee and Friends of Burlington Gardens. For the 6 p.m. potluck,
please bring a dish to share and your own place setting. A community
discussion will follow the
film. Click the link to watch
