2008-2009 mini-grant programs administered by Friends of Burlington Gardens

  
mini-grant winnerSince 2006, Friends of Burlington Gardens (FBG) has provided technical assistance and mini-grants to assist community and school garden projects in the Burlington area and across Vermont.

Thanks to generous support from The Bay and Paul Foundations, Ben & Jerry's Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House Charities, a total of  $14,825 in garden mini-grants were awarded by FBG in May, 2008.  Through a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation, $5,000 in additional mini-grant funding has been provided to spur the development of new community garden sites in Vermont.

Spring mini-grant timeline and categories (recipients are currently completing projects)


The links below provide listings for the mini-grants awarded on May 29, 2008 to 56 garden projects statewide. The final report deadline was August 30, 2008.

VCGN community garden mini-grants:
20 mini-grants totaling $6,000 were awarded to new and existing community gardens in Vermont for improvements including fencing, water systems, tool sheds, and signs/bulletin boards. Community gardens eligible for mini-grants provide people in a neighborhood or community with plots to grow their own food. Gardeners must demonstrate an ability to work together to accomplish mini-grant funded projects. Preference was given to gardens serving low to moderate income households.

VCGN school garden mini-grants:  30 mini-grants totaling $6,000 were awarded to new and existing school-based gardens in Vermont that directly involve K-12 students during the school year and summer months. Mini-grants may be used for improvements including raised beds, top soil, fencing, water systems, and signs/bulletin boards. Accomplishing the mini-grant funded projects must involve students in service-learning. Preference was given to garden projects serving low to moderate income youths.

Burlington school and youth garden mini-grants:  Six mini-grants totaling $2,825 were awarded to school and youth gardens in Burlington that directly involve K-12 students during the summer months. Mini-grants may be used for improvements including raised beds, top soil, fencing, water systems, and signs/bulletin boards. Accomplishing the mini-grant funded projects must involve students in service-learning. Preference was given to garden projects serving low to moderate income youths.

The 2007 VCGN Mini-grant Program was funded by the The Bay and Paul Foundations (school-based gardens), the Ben and Jerry's Foundation (community-based gardens), and Gardener's Supply (honorable mention awards). The 2006 VCGN Mini-grant Program was funded by The Bay and Paul Foundations.
